Beginner Beading, what do I need to get started?

Hello and Welcome to Artistry with Beads / Silversmithsupply.com - I hope you will find our information and products valuable for your jewelry making craft.  I want to share some information about beginner beading in this my first Blog.  Please bear with me as I have not done this before and will probably break all the rules of Blog etiquette.  The first thing I would like for you to do is click on our “New to Beading” link on our Home page.  The information provided there will give you some very basic leads on what you need in the way of tools/equipment, in order to begin  your first beading lesson.  You will soon become familiar with the terms and names of various tools necessary to start beading and making jewelry.  You may have some of the items already in your tool box at home.  If so only collect the items you don’t have to complete your work bench tools.  I would also suggest you find a spot that you can set-up exclusively for your beading/jewelry making.  This can be any size area, but would suggest no smaller than 2′ x 2′.  You can purchase a jewelry display tray 14″ x 8″ and with a velvet pad you are set up to knot beads and also display your finished goods to buyers.  Display is a very important aspect of selling your work.

Drilling Semiprecious Beads with Diamond bits

If you would like to drill semiprecious beads or enlarge holes for stringing or knotting I suggest using diamond tipped drill bits.  I like the tapered type for smaller holed beads and the cylinder type for larger holed beads.  Always drill slowely so you don’t burn the diamond coating off.  You can dip the diamond bit into water to cool.
